Profile of Tom Barrett, Head of Hotels & Leisure
Previously Tom was Commercial Director of Choice Hotels Ireland where he profitably grew the business by over 50% pa between 2003 and 2007, creating the largest Irish hotel operator with over twenty hotels and 4,000 bedrooms.
In 2007, he negotiated and completed the sale of 11 Quality Hotel & Comfort Inn leases & management contracts for €43m to Pat McCann/TVC/Davy. Subsequently, he led the acquisition of the UK Master Franchise for the 4 star Clarion brand and sourced a UK pipeline of new build and conversion properties. In 2008/09, Tom devised a survival plan for Choice Hotels Ireland and led the business through a major refinancing and restructuring process.
Earlier, Tom worked with Forte Meridien Hotels & Resorts as Finance Director, where he grew profitability from the 40 European hotels to over €125m pa. During the 1997/98 Asian Financial Crisis he invested Meridien equity & debt in the region, which retained flagship hotels for the brand.
He has also held many operational & corporate finance roles with Diageo and Vodafone and was start-up CEO for Fastnet Line Ferries (Cork Swansea). Internationally, he has worked in London, Paris, New York and Hong Kong. Tom holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and is a Management Accountant.
