Art and cinema on the Côte d’Azur, an inspiring home for storytellers

Long before Hollywood began its love affair with Cannes, the stunning coastline and countryside of the Côte d’Azur had captured the imagination of artists, writers and dreamers.

Now, each spring, the famous French resort is transformed into the epicentre of global cinema. The glamour of the international film festival is undeniable, but Cannes also has a soul: with historic buildings, the chic Croisette and famed Palais des Festivals complete with red carpet, it is a city steeped in storytelling.

The Côte d’Azur on camera

With over 1000 filming days annually on the Côte d’Azur, it remains one of the world’s most cinematic and sought-after destinations – and an endless source of inspiration.

From classic French new wave masterpieces to Hollywood blockbusters, the Côte d’Azur has served as the setting for some of cinema’s most iconic moments: Grace Kelly and Cary Grant racing through the winding corniches in ‘To Catch a Thief’, the sun-drenched elegance of ‘La Piscine’, not to mention many a dramatic James Bond scene. All showcase the appeal of the French Riviera.

Art and literature on the Côte d’Azur

Before the glamour of cinema, it was artists and writers who fell under the French Riviera’s spell. Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Klein, Fitzgerald, and Greene all found inspiration here, drawn by the light, colour and lifestyle. Places like Antibes, Nice and Vallauris became canvases for their genius and today continue to nurture creativity with thriving galleries, art studios and cultural events.

People still flock to the riviera, finding the same magic that captivated the greats. For example, the charming village of Saint Paul de Vence, known as the French village with the most art galleries per square metre, is a must-visit location, with cobbled streets, exceptional views and a dreamy lifestyle.

Regardless of your preferred art form, residents of the Côte d’Azur will agree that a French Riviera home is one where inspiration meets the everyday, with an enviable culture and lifestyle on the doorstep.
