A day in the life: Róisín Lenehan, Graduate Surveyor

A day in the life: Róisín Lenehan – Graduate Surveyor

Background

I studied Business and Law in University College Dublin after I left school. I enjoyed the course, but the usual graduate programmes from that degree didn’t appeal to me. I was exposed to property from a young age and it always sparked my interest. During Transition Year in school I had completed the Sherry FitzGerald transition year week. In my final year in college I worked part-time for a residential agency doing open viewings. It was after this that I decided to look further into the opportunities for a non-cognate in property.

I came across the Savills Scholarship Programme. This programme provides graduates with the opportunity to study part-time in a Masters programme in TUD, and to work full time as a graduate.

The application process was straight forward and consisted of an interview and short presentation. This seemed daunting given my lack of background in property, but I believe it was my differing college background that helped me to stand out.

Typical day

I started the programme in September 2018 in the Hotels & Leisure Department. I got an insight into all aspects of agency including sales, acquisitions, valuations and consultancy. The team was small which benefitted my learning as I was very involved straight away in all areas of work. My experience on the Hotels and Leisure team was very rewarding and a great start to my career in Savills.

In September last, I rotated to the Investment Department. This is a bigger team, so is a much different working environment and as such has been a great learning experience. A typical day would include preparing brochures, pitches and reports as well as pricing assets. I also get the opportunity to go on site visits and meet clients.

What's your favourite thing about Savills?

For me it’s the people and the culture in Savills that make the company so enjoyable to work for. There is a great atmosphere around the office. There is no divide or hierarchy amongst staff, and everyone is very helpful and encouraging.

Future Aspirations

My hope is to graduate from my Masters and continue to gain experience in my department in order to sit my APCs and become a Chartered Surveyor.

Róisín is currently a graduate surveyor with Savills Investment department.
